HistoryTuesday Forum 28 years and counting!
In September 1980 a group of six area business women decided to start a women's group in answer to the Kiwanis and Rotary. At that time, neither of those groups allowed women. These women wanted the opportunity to exchange ideas, develop business contacts, encourage cross-referrals and have a forum to discuss business issues...in other words to NETWORK. They scheduled their meetings at noon on Tuesday. During the years of '81 and '82, they chose a name, created a mission statement and recruited members. They looked for women doctors, lawyers, professors and other professional women. They met at an exclusive club called the Tarratine Club on Park Street and before long they had a membership of 35 and a presence on the Bangor Community.
Having a renewed outlook, Tuesday Forum attracted new members and have had some really fascinating programs dealing with not only women's business issues, but physical and mental health, literary topics, children and still have maintained our purpose of networking and friendship. With the new outlook, we also reworked our logo to reflect a more contemporary view of the Forum.
The membership had fluctuated between 35 and 95 but interestingly has averaged about 50 members, proving that there is still a place in the Bangor area for a group such as Tuesday Forum. |
